Dissecting 'Niagara': Part One

As soon as I watched Niagara a couple of weeks ago, I knew I wanted to do a post on it. I live near the area and my family occaisionally treks up there just to walk around the parks and see what the latest horrendus tourist attractions are. I thought it'd be neat to do a few "then and now" posts since a lot has changed since Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten roamed the area in 1953. I will say one thing; if you are planning to visit the Falls, the American side does not have the best view. Cross the Rainbow Bridge and you will have an amazing view of both the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The movie was filmed on the Canadian side, therefore, giving the best view possible. I can't help but rip this movie apart for the geography and setting. The story itself is terrific, but there are some points that get me thinking. The main thing that drives me crazy...The Rainbow Cabins are in a totally wrong place. Where they "are" is really a guardrail that goes around basically the whole thing to keep people from, ya know, jumping. Even the movie shows this error: In this pic, you can see the view of the Horseshoe Falls with the guardrail in the foreground (my dad just filled me in that the original guardrails are still there, so you could be standing exactly where MM stood!) Then in this pic, the cabins are located pretty much in the same spot as the guardrail (although I just noticed you can see the rail behind the cabins) My dad also said that there have never been cabins directly next to the Falls; we both assumed that they were brought in for the movie set and whisked away after filming. This is my first installation of Dissecting Niagara, I'm excited about the project! Hope you all like it and look out for part two. For more info on the Falls, go here. Many thanks to Scott at the TCM message boards for sending me the awesome caps!

I was just at Niagara Falls last week, and have to confess, the movie was fresh in my mind! I think one of those "cabins" in the movie was actually a small pavilion that was dressed up. Looking at aerial photos, it looks like it's still there, just up the embankment from where you board the Maid of the Mist boats. There's a fairly large paved area around that pavilion, so the filmmakers probably dressed the whole area up to look like it had a bunch of cabins.
